Antique 1830's Regency Old Sheffield plate pedestal cake basket, swing handle






Regency Old Sheffield plate cake basket of shallow fluted round form, trimmed with a large gadrooned border and raised on a pedestal foot. The overhead swing handle has circular box hinges and is decorated with applied acanthus leaves and scrolling feather design. The centre of the handle has a vacant cartouche, so this can be personalised as a present. Old Sheffield Plate is the process of fusing a layer of silver on to a layer of copper. The process was discovered by Thomas Boulsover in 1742; it was replaced by cheaper electroplating around 1840. 8 cm tall to rim. 24 cm tall to handle. 29.5 cm diameter on top.
